Small Lives, Big Ideas: Hanging the March Wall

Hello. Somehow it is already time to think about the March wall at StreetSmART Gallery. How in the world does time pass so quickly? The older I get, the faster the pages of the calendar seem to flip to the next month.
This month’s wall is titled Small Lives, Big Ideas, and choosing the paintings felt a bit like trying to organize a room full of tiny personalities. It was a chance to look back at the lives of insects and all the fun they have when we, the humans, are not watching.
This was a complete wall rehang, much to Matt’s dismay. Friday night found me laying the pieces out and trying to determine the best pattern for the wall. There was a lot of placing work on the floor, stepping back, and asking Matt for his opinion (which he did not have, in case you were wondering).
Once the selection was made, I bagged up the paintings, ready for hanging day. This is where I enlisted the help Matt could not dodge. I dragged him along. He is now well practiced in the art of holding things, stepping back, and saying that one feels a little high. He barely grumbled when he had to raise an entire row of paintings to accommodate the table.
His mother joined in as well, which instantly elevated the operation. More eyes. Better instincts. We finally stepped back and declared the wall hung.
The wall went up a little earlier than planned. Honestly, the insect world is probably thrilled to have a few extra days to hang out at the gallery. Seeing the ants, ladybugs, roly polys and caterpillars all together (even the lightening bugs made an appearance), busy with their small lives and unconcerned with the cares of the world, made me smile.
Small Lives, Big Ideas is now up and ready for wandering eyes. It is playful, curious, and quietly reflective, much like the process of getting it there.
I will be at the gallery for First Friday in March, and I would love to say hello if you stop by. Come take a look, linger for a bit, and see what the smallest lives have been up to.
Thank you for reading The 3rd Flamingo, a blog for art lovers, creative wanderers, and anyone who has ever made a beautiful mess.
