OMG! Thought Just Left – The Clueless Monk of June

June arrives, sunny and slow, and immediately proves it has no respect for focus, memory, or recalling what you came here to do.

O.M.G.! The Thought Just Escaped — The Clueless Monk of June

Our monk responds exactly as any sensible human would: eyes rolled up, pupils searching, mouth slack, expression somewhere between “wait… what?” and “oh no, I know this… I think?”

June’s monk has earned this look. The rolled eyes say, “I know there was something important.” The slack mouth says, “Was it that thing… or that other thing…?” Every part of his face radiates endearingly befuddled charm—a perfectly human display of mid-thought confusion.

What you cannot see in the painting is that every lost thought has a tiny, invisible adventure. The brilliant idea, the perfect insight, the clever plan—all gone. No drama, just a subtle mental scramble. Eyes darting upward, pupils hunting for a clue, mouth slightly open… classic, adorably clueless.

This monk wasn’t always like this. Once, he had a sharp, observant mind, quick to catch every detail. Somewhere along the spiritual path, focus softened, steel turned to tofu, and logic occasionally went on vacation. He has tried meditation, candle-gazing, deep breathing, even fruit-based exercises—but thoughts slip through, leaving him scrambling to recall… anything.

And yet, he’s okay with it. Forgotten thoughts either return eventually or are replaced by something new (like lunch). Either way, life continues, and he continues to look wonderfully confused while doing it.

When I painted him, he started with focus and upright posture. Then it happened: pupils rolling, mouth slackening, a tiny flicker of panic as a thought disappeared into the ether. That became the painting. Honest. Funny. Endearingly clueless.

He now lives near the koi pond, partly because it’s peaceful, partly because he forgets where he put everything. The other monks call him “Cloudmind,” and he answers… eventually. Despite his frequent mental blank-outs, he’s cheerful, not wise, not enlightened—just wonderfully, charmingly not very smart.

June is a month of fleeting thoughts, scrambled memories, and tiny moments of “what was I doing again?” This monk proves it: inner peace doesn’t require brilliance. Sometimes it just requires letting your mind wander, searching desperately for a clue, and grinning at your own confusion.

Now it’s your turn. Notice those fleeting thoughts, the mental “oops” moments, the ideas that vanish. Can you roll your eyes skyward, mouth slack, and smile at your own delightful cluelessness? June’s monk says yes.
