Stacked Serenity: How a Painting Survived the Village Arts Festival

At this year’s Village Arts Festival, disaster struck, or at least, Stacked Serenity did. For anyone unfamiliar with this piece, it holds a special place in my heart, and you can read more about it here. A sudden gust of wind toppled a wall, sending paintings tumbling to the ground. Stacked Serenity landed squarely on the corner of a table, tearing two deep gashes in the canvas. My heart sank, but thankfully, it was the only casualty.

Once I finally had a quiet moment, I turned to the internet to figure out how to repair a ripped canvas. There were countless articles, videos, and tutorials, all emphasizing that PVA glue was essential. After acquiring the right glue, I was ready to start. I carefully trimmed away stray threads, cut a spare piece of canvas to use as a patch, and glued it in place. Every step required patience, precision, and a little bit of hope.

Now comes the hardest part, the waiting. For twenty-four hours, the patch is held in place with weights, and all I can do is imagine whether my repair will hold. I keep picturing Stacked Serenity rising from its little adventure intact, as if nothing had ever happened.

The best part of the repair process is that the artist of this masterpiece can now repaint, update, and touch up the painting. Not only has it survived a tumble, but it also has the potential to come back even stronger, with a few heroic battle scars that tell its story. There is something comforting in knowing that art can be resilient, and that even after an unexpected accident, there is room for creativity, renewal, and a little bit of magic.

Even paintings deserve a second chance, and every mishap can become part of a story. If you are an artist or an art lover, take a moment to inspect your work, care for it, and embrace its imperfections—they make each piece truly unique.
