Resurrected Paintings: The Shark Always Moving

There is something different about the shark.

It was always meant to move.

The shape of it carries motion, even when it’s still. There is a kind of energy in it that doesn’t pause or settle. It continues forward whether I am ready or not.

Which, for a long time, I wasn’t.

I started the shark with intention. The idea was clear, the beginning made sense, and then at some point… it didn’t. The background became uncertain. The direction lost a little of its clarity. And instead of working through it, I did what I have done with many of these paintings—I set it aside.

And it went into the closet. Where it waited.

That is the quiet truth of these resurrected paintings. They don’t disappear. They wait. Patiently. Without complaint. Without demand. They simply hold their place until something changes.

And something did change.

When I pulled the shark back out, it didn’t feel like starting over. It felt like returning. Like picking up a conversation that had been paused but not finished.

I could see the background differently now. What once felt unclear began to reveal itself. The decisions didn’t come all at once, but they came more easily than before. One step led to the next.

That is something I have been learning.

Sometimes a painting doesn’t need more time. It needs different time. Sometimes it doesn’t need more effort. It needs perspective. And sometimes it just needs me to stop walking away from it.

The shark has been doing exactly what it was made to do. It keeps moving. Constant.

Uninterrupted. Built for motion.

The only question is whether I am willing to keep up.

The truth is, I wasn’t always.

But now, I am.

And now the shark is no longer waiting in the same way. It is in progress again, moving forward, one decision at a time, closer to being finished than it has been in a long time.

This is the first of the resurrected paintings to return.

And it won’t be the last. I don’t know which painting will come next. I don’t know when I will start a new one.

They’re all just waiting their turn.

And when I open the closet, I will know which one is ready.

This post is part of my “Resurrected Paintings” series—where unfinished work waits until it is ready to return.

They’re all just waiting their turn.
